Airport in northeastern Romania reopens after EUR 23 mln upgrade

26 October 2015

Suceava's Stefan cel Mare International Airport, located in northeastern Romania, was reopened for international traffic on Sunday after more than a year of work. The airport was upgraded through a project worth RON 105 million (some EUR 23 million), financed with money from the European Union.

State-owned airline Tarom is to resume its regular flights from Bucharest to Suceava on November 12, according to airport director Ioan Mariuta, cited by local Mediafax. However, the work at the airport will continue until December 10, he added.

Catalin Nechifor, the president of Suceava County Council, also said that that airport would enter a new revamping stage that targets the second terminal for passengers and cargo transports.

He added that the County Council would adopt the new airport fees starting November 9. After that date, the authorities can sign contracts with low-cost airlines and other companies that want to operate flights from Suceava Airport. The UK, Spain, Italy, and Germany are some of the destinations targeted by the local authorities.

Suceava Airport was closed for revamping in January 2014. The work included the runway upgrade, building a new control tower, and revamping the passenger terminal. The local authorities plan to start working on a new terminal for external flights next year.
