Almost half of Romania’s children live in poverty
More than a third of Romania’s population is at risk of poverty and social exclusion, whereas the percentage among children reaches 46%, according to an infographic of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Romania, which quoted Eurostat data for 2015, reports local Economica.net.
The percentage of people living in poverty amounted to 47% in 2007, when Romania joined the EU. In 2015, the percentage dropped to 37.3%, namely a reduction of poverty by about 10 percentage points, according to the document.
However, this improvement hasn’t reflected equally on the general population, but rather more on the elderly. In 2007, almost 58% of the Romanians of over 65 were living in poverty. The figure dropped to 33% in 2015. This means a decrease of 24 percentage points.
By comparison, 52% of the children under 6 were living in poverty in 2007. Their percentage decreased by only 6 percentage points in 2015, to 46%, the study points out.
