American Zlatomir Fung wins cello final at Romania’s 2016 George Enescu Competition
American Zlatomir Fung, 17, won the cello section of the 2016 George Enescu International Competition. The audience at the Romanian Athenaeum rewarded him for his performance in the competition’s final with standing ovations after he played Enescu’s Simfonia Concertante op. 8 accompanied by the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra.
Zlatomir Fung will get a cash prize of EUR 15,000 but, more importantly, he will also perform on the stage of next year’s George Enescu Festival in Bucharest.
Fung is currently studying at New England Conservatory Preparatory School and in 2010 he founded The Mix Quartet. He performed as a soloist accompanied by numerous orchestras like Santa Cruz Symphony, The Boston Pops Orchestra, The Peninsula Orchestra, The Grand Rapids Symphony, Symphony Pro Musica, and Lausanne Sinfonietta. He has also won several other international prizes.
Russian Anastasia Kobekina finished the competition on second place and Mon Puo Lee from Spain was third. Second place came with a EUR 10,000 prize and the third place prize was EUR 5,000.
