Rare jobs such as air traffic controller, clinical trials monitor, or sommelier are the best paid such professions in Romania, according to an analysis by human resources consultancy firm Smartree.

For example, the net starting salary of an air traffic controller is of some RON 20,000 (EUR 4,400) per month, but can reach RON 30,000 (EUR 6,600) after a few years, reports local News.ro. State-owned Air Traffic Services Administration – ROMATSA is the only company in Romania that employs air traffic controllers.

Sommeliers can make an average of RON 4,500 per month (some EUR 1,000). Meanwhile, crane operators, argon welders, and rope access technicians can earn between RON 3,000 (EUR 660) and RON 3,500 (EUR 770) per month.

Romania currently faces an acute shortage of qualified personnel when it comes to crane operators and welders, as most of the Romanians with such skills have left the country. These jobs don’t require higher education.

Among the rare jobs that require a university diploma, there are land surveying technician, medical equipment technical engineer, clinical trials monitor, geodesist, and actuary. For example, a clinical trials monitor can earn a net salary of RON 6,000 (over EUR 1,300) per month.

The minimum gross wage in Romania increased from RON 1,250 to RON 1,450 (EUR 322) on February 1, 2017.

The average gross wage in Romania was RON 3.168 (EUR 700) in January 2017. Employees in the tobacco industry had the highest average gross wage in January, namely RON 8,833, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INS).
