Bill: Biomaterial content will be marked on plastic bags in Romania

18 April 2017

Several MPs from the Social Democratic Party (PSD), Save Romania Union (USR), and from national minorities have drafted a law that may oblige producers to mark the content of biomaterial on plastic bags.

Those that fail to do this will get fines ranging between RON 15,000-25,000 (EUR 3,300-5,500), according to the draft bill submitted to the Senate, reports local News.ro.

The bill also provides that plastic bags need to have a content of minimum 30% of biomaterial starting next year, minimum 50% starting 2020, and minimum 60% starting 2025.

The current law transposes a EU Directive from 2015 that aims to reduce the use of very thin plastic bags.
