Britain's Prince Charles makes official visit to Romania at end-March

07 March 2017

Prince Charles, the heir to the throne of the United Kingdom, will make an official visit to Romania on March 29-31. This will be his only second official visit to the country since 1998, according to the British Embassy in Bucharest. The visit is part of a regional tour that will continue in Italy and Austria.

Prince Charles has made private visits to Romania almost every year in recent years. He usually comes in early-summer to visit his properties in Transylvania, his favorite region of Romania.

During his visits, Prince Charles has also had meetings with Romanian officials. He met with President Klaus Iohannis in 2015 and 2016. Last year, he invited President Iohannis to visit the United Kingdom.

Prince Charles is a big fan of Romania in general and Transylvania in particular. He first visited Transylvania back in 1998 and has been spending holidays here ever since. He owns several old properties in Viscri (Brasov county), Valea Zălanului (Covasna), Mălâncrav (Sibiu), and Breb (Maramures).

Prince Charles has also been the patron of several foundations in Romania over the years and, in 2015, he launched his own foundation, which supports architectural heritage preservation, farming, and sustainable development in Romania.
