Bucharest mayor wants special lanes for public transport

11 August 2016

One of the Bucharest City Hall’s primary objectives is to increase the quality of public transport services in the capital. Thus, the Municipality plans to build special lanes for buses, taxis, and emergency intervention vehicles, mayor Gabriela Firea announced on Wednesday.

Several specialists from the Bucharest City Hall and the Streets Administration department are already working to identify the streets in Bucharest where such lanes could be built.

Moreover, the City Hall, together with the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police and Traffic Police, will analyze the possibility of creating areas for taxis in the bus stations, Firea also said.

The plans were presented during Gabriela Firea’s meeting with representatives of the Confederation of Licensed Operators and Carriers in Romania (COTAR), the Association for the Rights of Independent Taxi Drivers (ADTI), the Chamber of Taxi Drivers, and representatives of other private operators of public transport. During the meeting, the mayor tried to identify the participants’ problems and find solutions for them, according to a statement from the City Hall.

Bucharest currently has special lanes for buses and taxis on some of its main boulevards, but these are often disregarded by other drivers.

Bucharest's new mayor Gabriela Firea promissed to make public transport free of charge in Bucharest after she was elected in June, but later nuanced her statement.
