With the winter holidays just around the corner, Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea has met with representatives of the traffic police and local police to identify measures and solutions on easing the traffic that could intensify in this period.

The mayor said that she would ask the Ministry of Interior to increase the number of traffic police officers in intersections and crowded areas such as the ones where shopping centers are located, “to avoid traffic jams or accidents.”

Moreover, Gabriela Firea said that the traffic and local police “should clear the special lanes already implemented on some boulevards.”

She also requested the Streets Administration to “restore the traffic signs where rehabilitation works are carried, but also wherever is necessary,” and to check the traffic lights.

“I will have a meeting with district mayors and ask them to mobilize local police officers to take drastic measures regarding cars parked on large boulevards that block traffic lanes or even means of public transportation,” the mayor also said.

Gabriela Firea also requested Bucharest public transport company RATB to increase the number of buses, trams in this period, to shorten the waiting time and prevent congestion.

Another topic addressed during the meeting is the purchase of equipment needed to optimize traffic management system in Bucharest.

Earlier this month, Gabriela Firea announced another measure aimed at easing the traffic in Bucharest, namely six park & ride parking lots that would be built at the city’s busiest entry points. That way, those who transit the city can leave their personal cars in these parks and take a bus or subway from there to the city.
