Bucharest schools closed this week due to cold weather, meteorologists issue new alerts
The cold weather will keep all the schools in Bucharest closed this week, mayor Gabriela Firea announced on Monday evening.
Previously, the mayor announced that the schools would only stay closed on Monday and Tuesday, due to the extreme cold alert the meteorologists issued for the entire country.
The measure announced on Monday evening by Gabriela Firea could also apply to the schools in Ilfov county, as well as other counties across the country that are really affected by the recent snowfall and freezing temperatures. University students will attend classes this week depending on what each university decides.
Meanwhile, the meteorologists issued new warnings of bad weather on Tuesday morning. A yellow alert of snow and strong wind will come into force on Tuesday, 21:00, and will be valid until Wednesday, 21:00. It targets Bucharest and Teleorman, Giurgiu, Dambovita, Prahova, Bacau, Galati, Vaslui, and Iasi counties, as well as parts of Buzau and Vrancea counties.
Also, two orange alerts of blizzard that cover Calarasi, Ialomita, Braila, Constanta, and Tulcea counties, and parts of Buzau and Vrancea counties will enter into force on Tuesday evening and will be valid until Wednesday afternoon. The wind is expected to blow with up to 80 km/h in this period.
The weather got extremely cold in Romania in the night from Monday to Tuesday, the lowest temperature of -32 degrees Celsius being registered in Intorsura Buzaului. The temperature in Bucharest also dropped to -22 degrees Celsius last night, according to the weather station in Baneasa.
The freezing temperatures also made the railway transport company CFR to cancel more than 40 trains on Tuesday. Find the list here.
