Bucharest University wins third place at the largest private law competition in the world

A team representing the Law Faculty of the University of Bucharest won the third place in the oral arguments phase of the Willem Vis, the largest private law competition in the world, according to a statement from the university.

The 14th edition of the competition took place in Hong Kong between March 26 and April 2, with the University of Bucharest’s team being the only European team that reached the semifinals of the oral arguments phase.

The University of Bucharest’s Law Faculty participates with eight students in the Willem Vis competition (both Hong Kong and Vienna editions), who together prepare all the stages of the two competitions. Four of them have pleaded in Hong Kong, namely Ioana-Catalina Bizic (fourth year), Ioana-Gabriela Ciornei (fourth year), Octavian-Florentin David (fourth year), and Sabrina-Gabriela Porteka (third year).

In the oral arguments phases (general and eliminatory), the Bucharest University team met and surpassed universities such as the Royal University of Law and Economics (Cambodia), University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (France), Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong), Stetson University College of Law (USA), University of Heidelberg (Germany), University of São Paulo (Brazil), and Wuhan University (China).

The four students who will represent the University of Bucharest in Vienna between April 8 and April 13 are Steliana-Andra Carabas (fourth year), Mircea-Pavel Dinu (third year), Horia-Gabriel Radulescu (third year), and Andreea-Livia Ricu (fourth year).

The Willem Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot is the largest and most prestigious competition in the world of international private law. It includes a version held annually in Vienna (now in its 24th edition) and a version held annually in Hong Kong (now in its 14th edition). More than 400 universities from around the world participate in the Willem Vis competition, including some of the most prestigious, such as Harvard, Yale, NYU, and University College of London.
