None of Bucharest’s subway stations, tunnels, and depots have authorizations from the Emergency Situations Inspectorate – ISU for fire protection, reports local Stirileprotv.ro.
About 600,000 people take the subway daily. If a fire starts on the subway, it’s impossible to break the windows without a hammer, which can’t be found on the spot, according to findings of the ISU representatives. They also discovered that some subway stations lack evacuation doors whereas in some cases the doors are locked.
Bucharest subway operator Metrorex argued that most subway stations were built and put into operation before 1990, when it wasn’t necessary to have ISU authorization.
