Discovery shoots new virtual reality production at Romanian medieval castle

27 September 2016

Discovery has chosen Romania’s Corvinilor Castle to shoot its newest virtual reality (VR) production. Located in Transylvania, the medieval castle is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Romania.

Filming will take place on October 3, and the content will be available on Discovery VR platform and the castle’s website at the end of the same month, for Halloween. Thus, the castle will be closed to visitors on Monday, October 3.

The idea of making The Haunting Castle production came following an internal competition carried out by Discovery Channel at international level, according to a statement from Hunedoara City Hall. Experts from Romania, UK, and the US will be part of the team.

“I am glad that our country is a constant source of resources and inspiration to colleagues from other countries, and that the initiatives of making content here are more frequent, especially after the recent shootings for Harley and the Davidsons in Romania. We will continue to exploit this area, whether we are talking about 360 videos, VR, live, fiction or documentary, to satisfy the Romanians’ curiosity about the world,” said Ada Roseti, Program Director for Discovery Central and Eastern Europe.

“Through this new project, we have the chance to promote another one of Romania’s attractions, namely the living legend of Transylvania, as Corvinilor Castle is known.”

Destination America, one of the Discovery TV channels in the US, will also broadcast some of the video content filmed at Corvinilor Castle, such as making of videos, and interviews with the crew and the guides from the castle.

Corvinilor Castle’s construction started in 1446 at the orders of Ioan de Hunedoara, who was the Governor of the Kingdom of Hungary at the time. The building features tall and strong defense towers, bastions, an inner courtyard, and a drawbridge. Several films have been shot in this special location in Romania.
