Donald Trump elected the 45th U.S. President
Billionaire Donald Trump surprisingly won the U.S. elections on November 8. The Republican candidate defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton after he won key battleground states such as Ohio, North Carolina, and Florida.
Although the victory hasn’t been officially called yet, Trump had a strong lead over Clinton, according to the counts presented by most media outlets in the U.S. He has already secured 276 elector votes 6 more than the 270 needed to win the elections, according to Huffington Post and was leading in several other states which haven’t been called yet.
Trump also had more than 1.2 million votes ahead of Clinton in the popular vote. Moreover, Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager sent home the supporters who were waiting for her speech at her campaign headquarters in New York.
According to sources quoted by CNN, Hillary Clinton called Donald Trump to concede defeat. Trump is expected to hold his speech.
Trump’s victory comes as a surprise, as most of the polls done before the elections date showed Clinton in front. Moreover, a couple of weeks ago, Clinton was so far ahead in the polls that her victory seemed almost certain. However, Trump managed to mobilize more voters with his anti-system speech.
He made many promises during his campaign, such as building a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico (that Mexico would pay for), temporarily banning most foreign Muslims from entering the United States, and get rid of Obamacare. He won with an anti-globalization speech focused on “making America great again”.
Thus, his victory, which came as unexpectedly as the vote for UK leaving the European Union, is likely to increase the uncertainty in global politics. Trump’s surprise victory also sent a ripple effect through the world’s markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, the main index of the New York Stock Exchange was down more than 4% in futures trading.
