EC approves Romania’s suspension of vaccine exports
Romania’s decision to suspend the exports of vaccines against measles, mumps and rubella received the approval of the European Commission in an emergency procedure, according to the Health Ministry.
Romania is currently going through a measles epidemic. The country has experienced shortages in the supply with the mandatory vaccines. Under these conditions, the Romanian authorities notified the European Commission of their intention to block vaccine exports. The measure would guarantee the necessary doses of vaccines for the immunization of children in Romania.
The total number of measles cases in Romania has reached 5,290 and the death toll has gone up to 24 since the outbreak of the epidemic, in September 2016, according to information from the National Center for Surveillance and Control of Communicable Diseases (CNSCBT).
