European Gymnastics Championships: Romanian champion Catalina Ponor wins gold in beam final

Romanian champions Catalina Ponor won her fifth European title in the balance beam competition of the European Gymnastics Championships taking place in Cluj-Napoca. She thus holds the record for most European title at this apparatus, with five gold medals.

Catalina Ponor, 29, has eight European gold medals, and three Olympic titles, which she got at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Larisa Iordache also won a bronze medal in the balance beam competition. She has also won five European gold medals in her career. Ponor and Iordache, the representatives of two different generations, are the only women gymnasts who have managed to bring medals for Romania in international competitions in recent years, in a sport Romania has dominated for decades.

Meanwhile, Marian Dragulescu, who won the floor final in the men’s competition on Saturday, also won a silver medal in the vault final on Sunday.

Romania thus gathered four medals, two of which were gold, at the European Championships hosted in Cluj-Napoca.
