FBI director: Romanian hacker Guccifer never accessed Hillary Clinton’s email server
Famous Romanian hacker Marcel Lazar, better known as Guccifer, has never hacked into former US Secretary of State and presumptive presidential nominee Hilary Clinton’s personal email server, according to FBI director James Comey. He thus contradicted the Romanian, who said that he had accessed Hilary Clinton’s email.
James Comey testified before the House Oversight Committee that the FBI interviewed Guccifer while authorities conducted their investigation into Clinton’s contentious email configuration, reports The Washington Times.
“Can you confirm that Guccifer never gained access to her server?” Rep. Blake Farenthold, Texas Republican, asked Comey.
“He did not. He admitted that was a lie,” the FBI director replied during the hearing organized on Thursday.
The FBI director recommended no criminal charges against Hillary Clinton for her handling of classified information while she was secretary of state. Had she been prosecuted for this, the case might have weighed a lot in her presidential campaign.
Romanian hacker Guccifer, who was indicted in the US for hacking into the email accounts of several officials, including one of Hillary Clinton's collaborators, was a key person in FBI's investigation.
In early-May this year, Guccifer claimed that he had hacked into Hillary Clinton’s personal email, back in 2013.
“For me, it was easy … easy for me, for everybody,” the Romanian said in an exclusive interview with Fox News, in which he described how he got into the former Secretary of State’s email server.
The Romanian hacker was extradited to the US earlier this year, following a ruling of the High Court of Cassation and Justice. On May 25, he pleaded guilty to two charges in a US federal court, thus facing a sentence of seven years in prison. The sentence is to be announced in September.
