Ford includes Romania’s Transfagarasan in its Europe’s Greatest Driving Roads video series

11 June 2016

Romania’s high altitude road Transfagarasan features in one of the videos from the Europe’s Greatest Driving Roads series presented by Ford and BP/ Castrol, which show both famous routes and little-known gems.

Over six videos, motoring journalist and former racing driver Steve Sutcliffe gets behind the wheel to explore each road while offering historic and cultural insights for every location in Romania, UK, Spain, France, Germany, and Mallorca. For each video, the renowned journalist drove the Ford that best complemented each route, including the new Focus RS, Mustang 5.0 V8 GT, Mustang 2.3 EcoBost, Focus ST, Focus ST diesel, and Fiesta ST. On Transfagarasan, Sutcliffe drove the Mustang 5.0 V8 GT.

The routes were ranked by thrill factor, road surface, accessibility, hospitality, scenery, and food and drink, and the researchers covered 15,000 km in 12 months to identify the most breath-taking drives.

“It is 330 kilometers long, has more than 100 hairpin corners, and offers some of the most incredible views in Europe. The breath-taking pass overlooked by “Dracula’s castle” in Romania is one of six routes brought to life in a new video series entitled “Europe’s Greatest Driving Roads,” reads a Ford of Europe statement.

Transfagarasan was built on Nicolae Ceausescu’s order, between 1970 and 1974. It has a total of 90 kilometers and is one of the most picturesque roads in the world, but also one of the most dangerous.

The road became famous worldwide after the famous British auto show Top Gear filmed an episode on it in 2009. Since then, the road has been used as a setup for international TV shows and TV commercials.

“If you are a true driving enthusiast, the Transfagarasan is genuinely a bucket list kind of place to visit,” said Steve Sutcliffe.

The other five Greatest Driving Roads are the Blakey Ridge in the UK, the C462 in Spain, D526 & D926 in France, the Black Forest Highway, B500 in Germany and MA10 “Mountain Road” in Mallorca.
