Foreign tourists spent on average RON 2,397 (EUR 525) per person in Romania last year, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INS).

In total, some 2.4 million foreign tourists checked into local accommodation units in 2016, and their total expenses amounted to RON 5.9 billion (EUR 1.3 billion).

Little over half (51.7%) of the foreign tourists organized their trips via travel agencies whereas 30.5% came on their own. More than half (57.6%) of all tourists came for businesses, congresses, conference or fairs. Their expenses accounted for 58.5% of the total.

Of the total business expenses, accommodation costs had the highest share (53%). The expenses of business tourists in restaurants and bars amounted to 17% whereas those for shopping accounted for 12%.
