Former PM launches NGO to support political opposition in Romania

06 January 2017

Romania’s former Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos, who has ended his term this week, plans to launch an NGO that will support the opposition in Romania.

Ciolos said that it will be a non-profit organization, not a political party because he didn’t want to divide even more the political right in Romania.

The NGO’s members will include members of the Ciolos cabinet such as Vlad Voiculescu (former health minister), Dragos Tudorache (former interior minister), and Dragos Pislaru (former labor minister), reports local Hotnews.ro.

Ciolos invited members of the Save Romania Union (USR) and the National Liberal Party (PNL) to join his NGO. These were the two political parties that supported Ciolos’ platform Romania 100. During the campaign for the parliamentary elections, Ciolos used this platform to promote his ideas. However, he refused to get involved directly in promoting these two parties until the last days of the campaign, which brought him critics from the liberals.

PNL got little over 20% of the votes in the December 11 elections and USR got about 9%. The Social Democratic Party (PSD) categorically won the elections taking 46% of the votes.

After Ciolos had made the announced on launching the NGO, liberal MP Mihai Voicu said that PNL would not cooperate with a man who distanced himself from the party in the electoral campaign and caused it to lose the elections. Meanwhile, USR’s Nicusor Dan said his party would cooperate with Ciolos on public policies.
