German ambassador praises Romanian protests
German ambassador Cord-Hinrich Meier-Klodt said on Friday that his first two months in Romania represented “a difficult period caused by Emergence Ordinance 13”, a bill through which the Government planned to change the Criminal Code and decriminalize some corruption offences.
He added that the people took “a very firm stance, coming in support of Europe and its values”, and that he’d like to witness such expressions in many European countries, reports local Hotnews.ro.
The ambassador said that his main message in the talks with Romanian authorities was to “use this special moment in the country’s history, to show that Romania can be at the center of European realities.” He added that, after Brexit, “Romania has the opportunity to play a very important role because it will be the sixth-biggest country in the European Union by population”.
Cord-Hinrich Meier-Klodt also said that “mutual national interests must look to Europe to find a common project there”.
