Greek tycoon’s yacht makes stop in Romanian port

09 July 2016

Christina O, the mega yacht that once belonged to Greek tycoon Aristotel Onassis, arrived in Romania’s Constanta port on July 5 and will most likely stay there until the end of this week.

The yacht had five Brits on board when stopping in Constanta port. However, the British citizens disembarked from the boat in Constanta and other passengers rented the yacht, Teodor Patrichi, the manager of Constanta Port’s Passenger Terminal, told local News.ro. The yacht can be rented for private cruises for USD 2 million a month.

Patrichi hasn’t revealed the nationality of the other passengers or their number.

Greek billionaire Aristotel Onassis bought the yacht after the Second World War, at scrap value of USD 34,000. At that time, the boat was just one of many surplus naval vessels, but the Greek tycoon invested USD 4 million in it and turned into a luxurious mega yacht. He named it after his daughter Christina.

After Onassis’ death, Christian donated the yacht to the Greek Government, which renamed it Argo. Greek shipping magnate John Paul Papanicolaou, a friend of the Onassis family, purchased the vessel in 1998, and renamed it Christina O. Since 2012, the yacht can be rented for private cruises.

Christian O has a length of 99.06 m, reaches a top speed of 19 knots, and can host 35 passengers. Some of its most important guests were Winston Churchill, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, and John F.Kennedy.
