Romanians bought 571 electric and hybrid cars in the first eight months of the year, double compared to the same period last year.

The sales of green cars accounted for 0.8% of the total number of car sales between January and August this year, up 0.4 percentage points compared to the first eight months of 2015.

In August, Romanians bought 169 green cars. By comparison, 98 green cars were sold in August last year.

Toyota remained the best-selling car in this category, with 391 units sold between January and August this year. It was followed by Lexus, with 105 units, and BMW, with 23 units.

Last year, Romanians bought 495 hybrid and electric cars.
