King Michael wants to attend Queen Anne’s funeral in Romania

04 August 2016

His Majesty King Michael I wishes to attend the funeral of his wife Queen Anne, which will be organized in Romania next week, Royal House lawyer Ioan Luca Vlad told local Agerpres.

For this, he would have to fly from Switzerland to Romania, where Queen Anne will be buried at Curtea de Arges. King Michael is 94 and in a bad health condition.

No decision has yet been made yet related to his presence at his wife's funeral, according to the Royal House representative. The Royal House will decide by August 9, and make an official announcement then.

Queen Anne died on August 1 in Switzerland and will be buried at Curtea de Arges in Romania on August 13. Her death occurred amid King Michael I’s precarious health condition, as he was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, and operated in a clinic in Lausanne, Switzerland. Due to his health condition, King Michael retired from public life and passed all his duties to the Crown Custodian, Princess Margareta.

Prince Radu said in early-July that the King’s “organism is working, but it gets more fragile with every week and month that passes, and is in more need of being helped.”  Prince Radu is married to Princess Margareta, King Michael’s eldest daughter.
