Law on special pensions for Romanian officials, unconstitutional

21 January 2016

The Romanian Constitutional Court has ruled that the law that grants special pensions for local officials was unconstitutional. The nine judges have made the decision unanimously.

The court has found that the law lacks clarity and brings inequality among the local representatives. The bill also fails to mention the financing source for these special pensions, according to the judges.

The Senate adopted on December 21, last year, a law that granted special pensions for mayors, deputy mayors, city council presidents, and deputy presidents. The Chamber of Deputies had adopted the law in November.

The special pension would have added to the normal pension once the local representatives reached retirement age. The allowance would have amounted to 55% of the gross monthly income multiplied by the number of terms each local official had served.
