Public space in downtown Bucharest to be named after late Romanian actor Radu Beligan

The public space located at the crossroad of Carol I Boulevard and Ion C. Bratianu Boulevard, in Universitatii Square in downtown Bucharest, will be named after Romanian actor Radu Beligan, who died on July 20. He was the world’s oldest active professional theater actor and one of the most popular and loved artists in Romania.

The project was voted by 26 of the 51 councilors present at the meeting, and is an exemption from the rule that says that this can happen only three years after a person’s death, reports local Hotnews.ro.

A bust of the actor will also be installed in the Radu Beligan Square, according to Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea.

Radu Beligan died at a hospital in Bucharest due to a cardiopulmonary arrest. He was born in a small village near Bacau to a Romanian father and a mother of Greek origins. In 2011, the actor said in an interview for a local publication that that his paternal grandmother was the cousin of Ion Creanga, one of the most well-known Romanian writers.
