Remote villages in Romania will be connected to the internet by the end of 2016

The Ro-Net project, which brings high-speed internet to a few hundred villages in Romania’s remote areas, will be completed by the end of 2016, said Catalin Marinescu, president of the communication authority ANCOM.

The project has brought internet connections to 100 places so far, Marinescu said, cited by local Agerpres. However, it should cover 750 villages.

The project’s cost is some EUR 84 million, EUR 56 million of which should be covered with EUR funds. Telecommunications company Telekom is implementing the program.

“Afterward, we will have to find solutions to cover the areas that are left uncovered,” the ANCOM president added.

Marinescu also said that the competition on Romania’s telecom market needed to be stimulated. A law on cyber security is extremely necessary, he added.
