Romania has almost 750 km of highways and over 10,000 km of dirt roads
Only 64 km of highways were finalized and opened for traffic in Romania last year, bringing the total highway network to 747 km. This represents a 9.4% increase from the previous year, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INS).
Moreover, the INS report shows that highways represent only 4.2% of total national roads in Romania.
As of December 31, 2015, Romania’s public roads totaled some 86,000 km. About 17,606 km were national roads (20.5%), over 35,300 were county roads (40.1%), and 33,158 km were local roads (38.5%).
Romania had 6,193 km of European roads (35.2% of the total national roads), 747 km of highways (4.2%), 281 km of roads with three lanes (1.6%), 1,807 km of roads with four lanes (10.3%), and 22 km of roads with six lanes (0.1%).
INS data also shows that 15 km of national roads, 2,024 km of county roads, and 8,560 km of local roads were dirt roads. In total, dirt and gravel roads represent almost 38% of the total network of public roads in Romania, or 32,303 km.
