Romania makes new try to include the Brancusi ensemble on UNESCO’s World Heritage List
Romania’s National Institute of Heritage and Culture Ministry will again try to include Constantin Brancusi’s Ensemble in Targu Jiu on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
The local authorities will reopen the file withdrawn by the Romanian state in 2015 following a recommendation from the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), Romanian Culture Minister Vlad Alexandrescu said in a Facebook post.
“We want to remake the scientific foundations of the file by allocating adequate time and skilled resources, including by attracting international experts in this area and the necessary budgetary resources,” reads the Minister’s post.
The file will most likely be submitted to UNESCO in February 2018, with a proposal for prior consultations with the World Heritage Centre in September 2017.
Constantin Brancusi, also known as “the father of modern sculpture,” is Romania’s most famous sculptor. Given his importance to the Romanian culture and history, February 19 was declared a national holiday last year, several events being organized in Romania and abroad on February 19 (the day when the artist was born).
The sculptural ensemble created by Constantin Brancusi at Targu Jiu is an homage to the Romanian heroes of the First World War. It includes three famous sculptures: the Table of Silence, the Kiss Gate and the Endless Column.
