02 August 2016

The Romanian Government considers declaring August 13 a day of national mourning, as that is the day when Queen Anne of Romania will be buried at Curtea de Arges, reports the local media. The Government could take this decision during the meeting scheduled for Wednesday, August 3.

The country may even have three days of mourning, as the Social Democrat Party PSD, the biggest political party in Romania, has requested the Government to take a decision in this sense, reports local Agerpres.

Queen Anne of Romania, the wife of former King Michael I, died on August 1, aged 92. The Royal House announced seven days of great mourning after the funeral, and then 40 days of mourning.

Condolence books are currently opened at the Peles Castle in Sinaia mountain resort, the Royal Palace located on Calea Victoriei in Bucharest, and the Elisabeta Palace. Moreover, all those who wish to bring flowers or lay wreaths are invited to do so at the Royal Palace in Calea Victoriei, in front of the main entrance.

The last Royal Funerals in Romania took place on July 24, 1938, when Queen Marie died. At the wish of His Royal Highness King Michael I, Queen Anne’s funeral will respect the tradition, according to a statement from the Royal House.
