Romania’s public television gets involved in fundraising campaign for Brancusi sculpture

30 May 2016

Romania's public television TVR was the first to respond to the Government's call for support in raising the money the state needs to buy Constantin Brancusi’s famous sculpture Wisdom of the Earth (Cumintenia Pamantului).

TVR announced that it would organize a televised fundraising campaign (teledon) and several special shows to help raise the money. TVR International will also broadcast both the teledon and the shows.

The Government announced last week that it had found new ways of raising the necessary money for buying Wisdom of the Earth: text messages (SMS) and fundraising campaigns broadcasted by televisions (teledon). The special numbers for SMS donations are to be announced soon.

The Government needs to raise EUR 6 million in donations by the end of September. Romanians can currently donate money on the campaign’s website, or by wiring money into any of the Ministry’s accounts opened at the State Treasury and several local banks. Donations come with tax exemptions.

The first results of the campaign are to be announced this week.

Wisdom of the Earth is one of Constantin Brancusi’s most famous sculptures still on Romanian territory. Made in 1907, the sculpture is currently owned by the heirs of the architect George Romascu, who bought the artwork from Constantin Brancusi in 1911.
