Romanian Simona Halep crushes Serena Williams

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, number 4 in the WTA ranking, crushed the current number one women tennis player in the world, American Serena Williams, in her second match in the WTA Finals in Singapore, on Wednesday.

Halep won the game in two sets, ended 6-0, 6-2. This is the Romanian’s first victory against Serena Williams and the biggest surprise so far in this year’s WTA Finals in Singapore.

Halep and Williams had met three times before this match and each time Serena won. In fact, Williams had only four losses in her career to the other seven players in this year’s WTA Finals, and an astonishing 50 victories.

This victory brings Halep close to the semi-finals of the competition. In her first match in the competition, Halep beat Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, on Monday.

Her last match in the Red Group of the tournament is against Serbian Ana Ivanovici.

The WTA Finals in Singapore brings together the eight best players in the world this season and the best eight doubles pairs. In the singles competition, the eight finalists were seeded in two groups where each will play against the others. The first two players in each group will advance to the semifinals of the competition and the winners in the semifinals will play in the final.
