Romania wants to buys 36 anti-submarine torpedoes for frigates
Romania’s defense contractor Romtehnica has initiated a public tender for buying 36 light anti-submarine torpedoes. The value of this contract is over EUR 36 million, without VAT.
The torpedoes will be used by the King Ferdinand and Queen Mary frigates, reports local Profit.ro. The torpedoes will be 3-meter long, and will have a range of at least nine kilometers at a minimum depth of 600 meters.
Romtehnica tried to acquire anti-submarine torpedoes in 2013 and 2014, but cancelled the public tenders because it hadn’t received any bids.
In 2003, during the Nastase Government, Romania bought two Type 22 Broadsword frigates that had been scrapped a year earlier by the British Royal Navy. Romania paid some GBP 116 million for the two frigates, which had been built in 1986.
