Romanian Constantin Brancusi sculptures inspire French fashion designer's new collection

04 February 2017

French fashion designer Stephane Rolland found inspiration in the sculptures of Romanian artist Constantin Brancusi, as well as Michelangelo and Rodin, for his Spring/Summer 2017 collection.

“Brancusi, with his ovoid sculptures, inspires me to aim at anatomic precision, asymmetrical birth of the world,” said the French designer, cited by Fashion Insider.

“Thus, monumental, yet slender dome gazar and faille dresses come into being, along with flowing hoods shaped like proud manes or pure gold halos surrounding the bust.”

Constantin Brancusi is Romania’s most famous sculptor. He was born in 1876 in Hobita, southern Romania. Known as “the father of modern sculpture,” Brancusi was a painter, architect and a master of the abstract art. He died in 1957, aged 81, and is buried in Paris. Read more about him here.

Last year, the Romanian Government tried to buy one of Constantin Brancusi’s most famous sculptures, Cumintenia Pamantului (Wisdom of the Earth), via a public fundraising subscription. The authorities agreed to pay EUR 11 million for the sculpture, with EUR 5 million coming from the state budget, and the rest from donations. However, they managed to raise only EUR 1.3 million until the end of the campaign, on September 30, 2016.

Romania could make new attempt to include Brancusi ensemble on UNESCO list in 2018
