Romanian President: Parliament should re-asses two-round local elections

14 June 2016

Romania’s future Parliament would have to seriously asses re-introducing the two-round local elections, after the lessons learned in the recent one-round elections on June 5, said the country’s president Klaus Iohannis.

The changed elections legislation, which also introduced the one-round vote, had its positives, such as reducing the possibility of buying votes, and increasing transparency in how parties finance themselves, the president has added. Also on the positive side, for the first time Romania implemented an electronic system which prevented multiple voting and allowed for a real-time attendance overview.

The country’s president also said he was happy to see new parties and independent candidates joining the political competition.

Romania will organize general elections this fall, replacing its Parliament and its Government. The current Government should start an awareness and information campaign in order to bring more people to the polls in autumn, added Iohannis.
