Romanian becomes the youngest alpinist in Europe to climb Mount Elbrus

09 August 2016

Young Romanian climber Erik Gulacsi, aged 12, has managed to climb Elbrus, the highest mountain in Europe and the tenth most prominent peak in the world, at 5,642 m.

Erik is thus the youngest alpinist in Europe to climb Elbrus.

“I’m glad that my first climb in high mountains was a success,” the young Romanian said, reports local Adevarul.

Another young Romanian climber, Dor Geta Popescu, holds the female European age record on Elbrus. She climbed the peak in 2015 at the age of 12.

In early February this year, Dor Geta Popescu climbed Aconcagua, the highest mountain outside of Asia, at 6,961 meters, being the youngest climber that has ever reached this peak. Altitudine Mountain Sports Club announced at that time that both female age records for the Aconcagua peak were held by Romanians: on the normal route by Dor Geta Popescu and on the Polish Glacier route by Crina Coco Popescu (since 2009).
