The number of fixed broadband connections in Romania increased by 300,000 last year reaching 4.3 million, according to the local telecom market regulator ANCOM.

Moreover, 52% of these connections (some 2.23 million) provided data transfer speeds of over 100 Mbps.

In terms of infrastructure, the number of fiber optics internet connections (Fiber to the Home – FTTH) tripled last year, reaching 428,000. However, most of the fixed internet connections in Romania are still FTTx, which means that the fiber optics infrastructure gets very close to the users’ homes, but the final connection is through cable.

The number of fixed internet connections surpassed the number of fixed phone lines, which dropped by 6% last year, to 4.27 million.
