Greenpeace Romania has launched a new platform where anyone can report cases of illegal logging.

On salvezpadurea.ro, Romanians can report directly to the authorities any case of tree cutting that seems to be illegal. The notifications will be sent to the forestry departments that manage the forests in question, and to the Forest Guards responsible for overseeing the areas where the problem was found.

All the notifications people make as well as the authorities’ responses and the measures they’ve taken are available on the website.

The website also provides useful information and instructions on how to recognize an illegal cutting, and what information to collect on site in order to prepare a proper documentation for the notification to be sent to the forestry departments and the Forest Guards.

In early-June this year, a Greenpeace Romania report revealed worrying statistics on illegal logging in the country: the local authorities registered a total of 34,870 cases of illegal logging in 2015, which means an average of 96 cases per day. The number represented a sharp increase from the 2013-2014 period when Romania registered 62 such cases per day, or 2012 when the number stood at 50 cases per day.
