Romania’s demographics: How many babies were born in the country in 2015?
The economic growth and the higher purchasing power in Romania in recent years have also had a positive impact on the country’s demographics. The number of new families and newborn has increased in the past two years.
Over 203,000 babies were born in Romania in 2015, some 10% more compared to 2014, according to official data released by the National Statistics Institute (INS) on Wednesday.
Last year was the second consecutive year when the number of births in the country increased, after reaching a record low of 176,000 in 2013. In 2014, the number of babies born in Romania was 185,000.
The highest number of births was registered in August, when some 21,000 babies were born.
The number of deaths also increased in 2015, reaching over 262,000 (up by 3.3%). Thus, Romania recorded a natural decline of 59,000 people, lower than in 2014, when the country lost 68,000 people due to natural causes.
The worst month was March, when close to 26,000 people died in Romania, almost 11,000 more than were born.
However, Romania also had three months with natural growth last year, for the first time in recent years. This means that the number of births was higher than the number of deaths in July, August, and September.
The number of marriages also increased last year by 4.4%, reaching over 123,000. In 2014, some 118,000 couples officially got married in Romania, up from 107,500 in 2013.
The number of divorces, however, saw a 9% increase, to almost 30,000, the statistic shows.
