Romania's famous Caraiman summit cross to undergo renovation with Norwegian funding
The famous cross on the Caraiman peak in Romania's Carpathian mountains will be restored with EUR 2 million via Norwegian funding. The money will be used to restore the cross, create a museum and a suspended viewing platform, special lighting, and wi-fi internet connection.
The 40-meter cross, which landed the world record for the tallest summit cross earlier in 2014, has never been restored since being erected in 1928. The local authorities in the mountain resort of Busteni, at the foot of the mountain where the cross stands, also started a campaign to raise funding for revamping the monument. The cross was raised in memory of the Romanian heroes who died in the First World War.
The cross is made of steel, placed on an 8-meter tall cement base, and is unique in Europe, not just because of its dimensions, but also for the altitude where it is located. The cross can be seen at night, as it is lit by 120 light bulbs, powered by an energy generator located within the cement base.
There are larger crosses in the world, and summit crosses at higher altitudes, but the Caraiman Cross is the largest such cross at high altitude, according to Guiness World Records.
