Romania's Government may challenge law on removing 100 taxes

26 October 2016

The law project that removes 102 taxes, which was voted yesterday by the Chamber of Deputies, doesn’t mention the financial sources to cover for the removal of these taxes, said finance minister Anca Dragu.

Thus, the Government considers notifying the Constitutional Court on this project, Dragu added, reports local News.ro.

“I can tell you that the global impact is RON 1.6 billion (EUR 356 million) if the financing source is not indicated, according to the tax responsibility law,” the finance minister said.

The Government also supports the removal of taxes, but only in the sectors where the financial effort had a reasonable impact and can be supported next year, she added.

Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos said yesterday that the Parliament’s decision to remove the radio-TV tax generates a situation that is outside the law. According to the law, the state can’t 100% finance the state television from the state budget. Ciolos also said that the independence of the two institutions is guaranteed by the financing source.

He also pointed out that the removal of the environment tax would leave the state’s Cash for Bangers program and the Green House program without financing.
