Romania's Government votes budget today

27 January 2017

Romania’s Government will adopt the draft budget for the current year today and will send it to the Parliament this evening, according to the announcement made by Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu on Wednesday.

The Government’s initial calendar provided that the Parliament would adopt the budget by January 25. The delay will not affect the measures approved by the Government in the first cabinet meetings, including the wage increases due to kick in starting February 1, according to officials.

Both PSD leader Liviu Dragnea and Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu were unhappy with the initial version of the draft budget presented on Monday. The PM summoned his ministers on Tuesday and had talks around the budget until late in the evening.

On Wednesday morning, the ministers presented new proposals for this year’s budget. Finance minister Viorel Stefan said on Wednesday that the budget deficit would remain around 2.99% of the GDP, and that the draft budget respects the limit of 3% provided by the Maastricht Treaty.
