Romania’s famous hacker Guccifer pleads guilty in US court, faces 7-year sentence
Famous Romanian hacker Marcel Lazar, better known as Guccifer, has pleaded guilty to two charges in a US federal court on Wednesday, May 25.
The Romanian, who has been accused of breaking into computer accounts of the Bush family, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, and others, has pleaded guilty to one count of unauthorized access to a protected computer and one count of aggravated identity theft, reports ABC News.
If found guilty, he could spend up to seven years in prison. The sentence is to be announced in September.
During the trial, prosecutors said that Guccifer hacked into the computers and social media accounts of some 100 Americans. In early-May, Guccifer claimed that he had also hacked into former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s personal email server, but brought no evidence to support his statement.
The Romanian hacker was extradited to the US in March, following a ruling of the High Court of Cassation and Justice.
