26 November 2014

The Maramures region in Northern Romania was included by National Geographic Traveler in a list of the best 20 travel destinations in the world for next year (Best Trips 2015).

“In the historic Land of Maramureș, the hills are alive with ways long forgotten elsewhere in Europe,” starts the description of this beautiful part of Romania in National Geographic Traveler, in which Maramures is called “Boldly Old World”.

“Maramureș is a wooden world. The farm tools are made of wood, and wooden gates, chiseled with century-old motifs, form the glorious entrances to modest yards around wooden, steep-roofed houses,” the article continues.

The authors talk about the beautiful, unspoiled nature of the place, about the wooden churches, which are part of UNESCO World Heritage and about the Merry Cemetery in Sapanta.

The Best Trips 2015 list includes other beautiful destinations such as Corsica, Medellin (Colombia), Koyasan (Japan), Tunis, Choquequirao (Peru), Port Antonio (Jamaica), and Taiwan.

Maramures is the only destination from Central and Eastern Europe which is featured in this selection.
