Romania’s population to decrease to 17 million in 2050
Romania’s population will decrease to about 17 million in 2050, returning to the level of the 1950s, and many of them will be old, according to the most recent report of the Court of Auditors.
The document notes that the declining and aging of the population will lead to increased costs and decreased revenues in the health system, and that the authorities must find new sources of funding for the long-term care for the elderly, reports local Economica.net. Romania does not yet have an integrated long-term care for the elderly.
Since 1990, Romania has seen a downward trend in the population. In 1990, the country had about 23 million inhabitants. Currently it has about 20 million people.
Today, unlike the rest of the world, most people in Romania are adults between 20 and 60 years. It is expected that by 2050, the largest segment of the population will consist of older people (those aged over 60 years), according to the Court of Auditors’ report.
