Runaway Romanian investor Sebastian Ghita caught in Belgrade

14 April 2017

Runaway Romanian investor Sebastian Ghita was located and arrested in Belgrade last night. He had a Slovenian ID and driving license and was with his brother when they were caught, according to an announcement of the Romanian Police.

Ghita was taken to a police station in Belgrade. Judicial sources told News.ro that Ghita’s brother had been followed. He was initially in Istanbul, then left to Serbia. When the Romanian investor was caught, he was with his brother.

A photo released by the Romanian police shows the former MP has been trying to alter his appearance by shaving his head and growing a beard.

Bringing Sebastian Ghita in the country could take about a month, as Romania has no extradition agreement with Serbia.

Romanian interior minister Carmen Dan told Digi24 that the extradition proceedings will begin only after the Serbian authorities will resolve the criminal case opened on the name of Ghita for having used false documents.

Ghita is being prosecuted in five criminal cases in Romania. The National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) has charged him with use of confidential information, bribery, buying influence, and blackmail.

The investor and former MP disappeared on December 21, last year after breaking the terms of the judicial control. The national police put out an APB (all-points bulletin) and alerted border checkpoints.

On January 10, the High Court of Cassation and Justice issued a European arrest warrant on the name of Sebastian Ghita. He was internationally followed and wanted by Interpol.
