Ten employees in Romania support nine retired people

The number of retired people reached 5.26 million in Romania in the second quarter of the year, down 47,000 compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile the average pension reached RON 943 (EUR 212), up 5.7% year-on-year, according to the National Statistics Institute (INS).

The ratio of retired vs employed people was 9 to 10. This means that ten employees were supporting nine pensioners. The ratio varied from one county to another. Bucharest had five retired people per ten employees whereas the Teleorman county had 17 pensioners per ten employees.

Giurgiu had the lowest average pension, amounting to EUR 168. By comparison, the average pension in Bucharest was EUR 256.
