Last year, more than a third of the population was at risk of poverty and social exclusion in three European Union member states, namely Bulgaria (41.3%), Romania (37.3%), and Greece (35.7%), according to the European Statistics Office (Eurostat).

The lowest levels were recorded in the Czech Republic (14%), Sweden (16%), the Netherlands and Finland (both with 16.8%), and Denmark and France (both with 17.7%).

Overall, almost a quarter (23.7%) of the EU’s population, namely 119 million people, was at risk of poverty and social exclusion last year. The level was similar to the one before the onset of the economic crisis in 2008.

The EU aims to reduce poverty and social exclusion for at least 20 million people until 2020.
