28 July 2016

Romania’s Health Ministry confirmed the third Zika virus infection case in the country. A man who returned from the Dominican Republic was diagnosed with this disease, according to a press release.

The man is 36 years old and lives in Cluj-Napoca. He travelled to the Dominican Republic between July 6 and July 13, after which he went to the US, from where he returned to Romania on July 21. On July 22, he went to the Infectious Disease Clinical Hospital in Cluj-Napoca with fever and a rash.

The tests carried out at the Cantacuzino Institute in Bucharest showed that the man was infected with the Zika virus. According to the Health Ministry, the man is out of danger.

This is the third confirmed case of Zika infection in Romania in less than a month. A young woman who returned from Martinique and a child who lives with his parents in French Guyana and came to visit his relatives in Romania were also diagnosed with the infection.

The Zika virus is transmitted through the Aedes mosquito bite and through sexual contact with infected persons. Zika can also spread from a pregnant woman to her fetus and can cause multiple problems, most notably microcephaly in the baby. However, it does not spread by air or through direct contact with infected people.
