UPDATE: Four dead, 50 injured in multiple car accident on Romania’s A2 highway
Three people died and some 57 were injured in a multiple-vehicle collision on Romania’s A2 highway, which connects the capital Bucharest to the Black Sea port of Constanta. The accident occurred on Saturday morning, at 8:42, in conditions of low visibility due to dense fog.
Some 32 cars were involved in the crash. About 40 injured people were taken to seven hospitals in Bucharest. Two were taken to the Floreasca emergency hospital in critical condition and needed to be operated, according to Digi24 news station.
Update: Another person died at the hospital on Saturday, increasing the number of victims to four.
According to the police, the accident occurred because the drivers didn’t adapt their speed to the traffic conditions and didn’t keep enough distance to the cars in front. The state company that manages the road infrastructure had installed warnings on the highway that told drivers to reduce their speed to 60 km per hour on Saturday morning because of the dense fog.
Apparently, the accident started because of a car that was running at 30 kmph on the fast lane. The driver was a driving instructor who said he slowed down because of the fog and the warnings. The last car that was involved in the accident had its speedometer stuck at 118 kmph, according to News.ro.
