Transporters in Romania plan protest against high insurance premiums

19 August 2016

The road transporters in Romania will start a different kind of a protest, as they are unhappy with the high tariffs of the mandatory car insurance policies RCA.

They will run at a maximum speed of 30 km/h every day for one hour, no matter where they are in Romania, until the RCA price is reduced to a maximum of EUR 1,100 per year for trucks, from the current EUR 4,900, according to a statement from National Union of Road Hauliers from Romania (UNTRR).

Besides this strike, UNTRR, together with other road transport employers' associations will organize a massive protest nationwide on September 15.

“Most carriers are brought to bankruptcy after the insurance premium rates for commercial freight and passenger transport increased by over 300% year-on-year, and by 500% compared to 2014. Thus, an RCA policy for a B0 class truck has now reached a price of RON 20,000 (some EUR 4,500) per year, compared to RON 4,000 (EUR 900) in 2014,” reads the UNTRR statement.
